The Obstacle CourseSM is presented in two one-hour sessions given by phone (a teleclass), a week apart. Classes are highly interactive and including coaching, and role plays and real plays. Class size is limited.
Most of us experience being blocked by obstacles that keep us from getting or doing what we want, whether what we want is something trivial or realization of our highest goals. Those obstacles may be external and outside of our control, or internalemotions, arbitrary standards, disbelief in ourselves or our goals, for example. Obstacles include unconscious habitual behaviors that divert us from our intentions. In the case of internal obstacles, the battle is entirely between us and us. That's what makes them so hard to identify and overcome.
In the first session of The Obstacle CourseSM you'll learn
- About the four types of obstacles: external obstacles and three internal types: Gremlins, feelings and habits.
- How to determine that there are obstacles in your way.
- The distinction between external and internal obstacles. (Is the obstacle to getting your best friend to stop smoking in your house an external obstacle or an internal one, for example?)
- How the choice of strategies for dealing with an obstacles depends on what type of obstacle it is.
Homework, assigned between the first and second sessions, will help you identify the goals that are impeded by obstacles and the obstacles' type. Participants will have the option of teaming with class members to work the assignment together.
In the second class we'll look at alternative strategies for getting past obstacles. We'll use role plays and real-life examples offered by participants.
Self awareness is the foundation of self management, and self management is essential for effective goal setting, identification and handling of obstacles, creating choices, and taking action. Therefore, in addition to the topics described above, participants will be offered several techniques for increasing self-awareness in daily life so that they can identify obstacles and choose among alternative methods of getting past them.
Pre-class preparation is recommended and is supported by extensive pre-class notes and supplemental materials on awareness provided without additional charge.
